God created Adam and it wasn't until the Spirit of Life was "breathed in" did Adam become alive. Before the "breath of life" was given by God, then the body was life-less.
An important facet to recognize is God was required for a life's creation, where all life since the "breathed in", has been derived from God's Creations. It is one proof of many against Evolution that it is impossible for inert dirt to be struck by lighting to create amino acids and proteins which then organize themselves into a living cell with a membrane, stomach, waste disposal, replication, food auguring methods and so much more.
Genesis 2:7 | Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being |
Notice that Adam is a direct creation of God like the Angels where you and I are not direct creations. Ultimately, we have the ability to become new creations when we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior. At the Judgment Seat of Christ, we also will receive a new body, that is based on how we lived our life, along with the Grace of God. The new body is a gift and a reward that is mentioned in 2 Corinthians 5:1-3 and 2 Peter 1:13-14. Click here for an amazing list dealing with our new bodies.
2 Corinthians 5:1-3 | 1 For we know that if the earthly house of our tabernacle be dissolved, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal, in the heavens. 2 For verily in this we groan, longing to be clothed upon with our habitation which is from heaven: 3 if so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. |
2 Peter 1:13-14 | 13 And I think it right, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance; 14 knowing that the putting off of my tabernacle cometh swiftly, even as our Lord Jesus Christ signified unto me. |
In Genesis 1:26:27, we learn the God created Adam along with Eve after God's own "tselem", having a likeness to the glory of God's Luminescence known as Shekinah. The phrase "in our likeness", is sometimes overlooked, which meant that there was a plurality in God, which we know as the Triune God of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, which is evident throughout the entire Old Testament.
Genesis 1:26-27 | 26 Then God said, Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, ... 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. |
When we read in Exodus 34:29-35, when Moses spoke with God, that afterwards the Israelites where afraid to be near to Moses because of God's glory on his face so Moses had to put a veil over his face to hide God's glory.
Exodus 34:29-35 | 29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the Lord. 30 When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the community came back to him, and he spoke to them. 32 Afterward all the Israelites came near him, and he gave them all the commands the Lord had given him on Mount Sinai. 33 When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face. 34 But whenever he entered the Lord s presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, 35 they saw that his face was radiant. Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the Lord." |
Matt 17:1-2 | 1 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light." |
Therefore, it is most likely that Adam and Eve, who were naked an unashamed Genesis 2:25, were covered with light because they were in the presence of God because God talked with them. Biblical Scholars have stated that the speaking is similar to how God spoke with Job in a whirlwind.
In Genesis 2:18 and Genesis 2:21-23 we learn more about God giving Adam a wife Eve that was created from a rib of Adams.
Genesis 2:18 | The Lord God said, It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him. |
Genesis 2:21-23 | 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man He made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said, 'This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. |
There is something incredible that many Christians, include this author, have missed for many years. Adam was present when God created life. Eve was not present during those events. For more information see the topic on the Days of Creation topic. |
The Hebrew word for "rib" is tsela which has the additional meaning of "side". See other uses of tsela in Exodus 25, 27 and 35. In 2 Samuel 16:13, David is facing a Shimei that is speaking profanities, throwing stones and moving along the side, tsela, of a hill. The use in Genesis of God creating Eve from Adam's rib has the possibility of a deeper meaning which is stating that God created Eve from half of Adam by using his side rib.
We know from scripture that Jesus is described, amongst many other titles, as the second Adam which Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians. Additionally, we learn about the prophecy in Isaiah that the Messiah would be pierced for our (the world's) transgressions.
1 Corinthians 15:47 49 | 47 The first man (Adam) is from the earth, earthy; the second man (Jesus) is from heaven. 48 As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the dust, and as is the man of heaven (Christ), so also are those who are of heaven. 49 Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven." |
Isaiah 53:5 | But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. |
The Church in the New Testament and all Believers since the beginning and to the end are often
portrayed as the Bride of Christ, where "bride"
is a model or a type. When Jesus was pierced on His
side with a spear by the Roman soldier on the Cross, the question for us is
there something prophetic happening besides
Isaiah 53:5?
When we read the scriptural method that God used in creating Eve then there is also this parallel that is breathtaking. Besides the prophecy that "not one of his bones will be broken" from Psalm 34:20, there is an additional model. When Jesus dies on the Cross to purchase His bride (the Church all Believers since the beginning), there is also the parallel that Jesus is pierced in-between His ribs, giving His side to the piercing just as Adam had his side opened up to gain his wife, Eve. |
Psalm 34:20 | He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken. |
John 19:33-37 | 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. 35 He who saw it has borne witness his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: Not one of his bones will be broken. 37 And again another Scripture says, They will look on him whom they have pierced. |
In Genesis 2:16-17, we learn about a tree that was in the Garden of Eden that was forbidden to eat fruit from it. More on the tree is discussed later in this topic.
Genesis 2:16-17 | 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die. |
Notice it is not an apple and that God instructs Adam not to eat of it. This "apple" quote started somewhere in the past and this author believes it is one of Lucifer methods to start doubt in the hearer of the Word of God that leads to disbelief. By naming the fruit an apple then makes all people who eat apples think the Scriptures are full of errors because it is silly to not be able to eat an apple. Unfortunately, the "the apple misinformation" is often even heard in Church Services.
In the passages dealing with Lucifer talking to Eve, notice that Lucifer is using deception by first using a method to doubt God when Lucifer says "Did God really say..." Next notice that Eve adds on "you must not touch it", which God never said.
Genesis 3:1-7 | 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, Did God really say, You must not eat from any tree in the garden ? 2 The woman said to the serpent, We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die. 4 You will not certainly die, the serpent said to the woman. 5 For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. |
Notice that Eve ate the fruit first and then Adam ate it. We do not know what was exactly was going through his mind, but the scriptures give us enough information to understand Adam's thoughts.
There was a failure in Adam's part by not stopping Eve. God told Adam in Genesis 3:17, "Because you listened to your wife" which also points to Adam making his decision based on what Eve said and not Lucifer. Adam held the role of head of their relationship and did not stop the incident of listening to Lucifer from continuing.
The confirmation of Adam not being deceived is read in 1st Timothy 2:14, which states that Adam was not deceived, so why did he eat the fruit with Eve?
Genesis 3:13 | Then the Lord God said to the woman, What is this you have done? The woman said, The serpent deceived me, and I ate. |
Genesis 3:17 | To Adam He said, Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, You must not eat from it, |
1 Timothy 2:14 | And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner |
Note that the point is not to be disparaging against Eve or state that she was weaker to the serpent's influence than Adam. We should ask ourselves three important questions:
Biblical Scholars point out that Adam so loved Eve that he decided to join her in her predicament and her shame, which meant there could be offspring to make a reconciliation.
Jesus Christ did the same thing, where He so loved the world that He joined us in our predicament, to become sin and take the full wrath of God the Father, where His payment on the road to the cross and on the cross could save us. Understanding this shows us that the scripture is teaching us that Adam was acting as a "Type of Christ" or "Model of Christ" in his actions, as a foreshadowing. The scriptures are full of this type of modeling and types, which are a finger print of the Holy Spirit.
In the moment in history when Jesus Christ was on the Cross, God the Son was separated from God the Father and God the Holy Spirit because Jesus was taking our place in the penalty of our sins. Notice in Matthew 27:46 that "My God" is said twice and the "forsaken me" shows the separation from the perfect unity of the Triune God, which was a pain we can never comprehend.
Matthew 27:46 | And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani? that is, My God, My God, why have you forsaken me? |
Furthermore, note that there are many examples throughout the Bible that men and women are acting as a model of Christ which we all should be aspiring. Do your own research on how many great examples like Joseph in Egypt and how he modeled the future Christ. Because of Adam's action, there was a future remedy made through the seed of the woman:
Genesis 3:15 | God is speaking to the Serpent, which is possessed by Lucifer that
caused Adam and Eve eating the
Forbidden Fruit, that the consequences
on Earth will be: 15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise His heel. Notice the following:
|
Note that there is more on the "seed of the woman" to consider because it was through Mary's lineage that Jesus Christ had legal right and claim to the Kingship of Israel, and of course the entire Earth. Women require the "seed" to come from the man, which was done through the Holy Spirit. Both Mary and Mary's husband Joseph were part of the Royal Linage of Jesus Christ, but Joseph's part of the family genealogy had the curse of Jeconiah problem which is an incredible and amazing point on of how God circumvented the problems and fulfilling the prophecy of Genesis 3:15.
The scriptures point to the conclusion that Adam so loved Eve that he chose to join her in the consequences, which at that time were not fully known.
Paul gives Jesus Christ the title of "The last Adam" in 1 Corinthians 15:45. The model and title points to:
This author, and scripture commentaries that speak about this area, are not stating that Adam was attempting to do anything that Jesus Christ accomplished. The model is what Adam did, that showed his great love for Eve, that by joining her then he could be there for her in the consequences and also hopefully rescue her. Jesus Christ did rescue us and so much, much more. This is one of countless patterns in the scriptures that point to scriptures being from God.
1 Corinthians 15:45-48 | 45 So also it is written, "The first MAN, Adam, BECAME A LIVING SOUL." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. 46 However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural; then the spiritual. 47 The first man is from the earth, earthy; the second man is from heaven. 48 As is the earthy, so also are those who are earthy; and as is the heavenly, so also are those who are heavenly. |
Most Christians are aware of the deception by Lucifer giving the thought that God was holding something back from Adam and Eve where if they ate the Forbidden Fruit, they would gain knowledge with the promise of "your eyes will be opened". Adam and Eve proceeded with eating which showed they were not trusting and believing that God was giving them His Best.
Genesis 3:5 | "For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." |
Lucifer absolutely deceived and lied to Adam and Eve about the Forbidden Fruit. Lucifer spoke correctly (a half-truth) about the consequence but the way Lucifer said it, had the interpretation to Eve in Genesis 3:5 to mean that God was holding back something, which is absolutely not true, a lie, along with evil. (This author is not stating Lucifer was telling the truth, but describing the deception.) Lucifer's lie had the connotation that something good would be gained in eating the Forbidden Fruit, but the truth was a curse and penalties would be gained.
An excerpt from the
Forbidden Tree topic: Regarding this forbidden tree, the tree was apparently visible, and in the Garden, where we are not given a reason why it is there. This author believes it has two possibilities:
It is the opinion of many Biblical Scholars that God did not initially remove Lucifer from the Garden of Eden along with anything done by Lucifer so that God can show His Angels the far-ranging consequences of rebellion. Recall that in Job 1:7, Lucifer tells God that he was "going to and fro on the earth", which shows access to the Earth. This highly probable theory is overwhelmingly confirmed by the whole of scripture where here are two points that are relating to the Garden of Eden:
|
The verses of Genesis 3:8-10 are letting us know about the discovery of God approaching Adam and Eve show that God was showing the love of a father for his children. God already knew that they had sinned and was giving them a chance to confess and repent. God is also teaching them many important lessons and consequences on how He is handling this grievous action.
Genesis 3:8-11 | 8 And they heard the voice of Jehovah God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Jehovah God amongst the trees of the garden. 9 And Jehovah God called unto the man, and said unto him, Where art thou? 10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. 11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? |
In an important correlation, notice the "cool of the day" and "thy voice in the garden" where the first phrase probably should be translated strong wind blowing. It is similar to when God spoke to Job in the whirlwind in Job 38:1.
In the New Testament, Jesus Christ did the same approach with the Apostle Peter, John 21:15-19, which is after Peter had denied that he knew Jesus Christ in all four Gospels such as Matthew 26:69-75. Jesus Christ renewed Peter's lost discipleship, which is similar to God approaching Adam and Eve. Peter, Adam and Eve still loved God, but had sinned where God did the initiating to restore the relationship.
When both Adam and Eve ate the fruit and were confronted by God as a Father who loves His Children, both Adam and Eve had sewed fig leaves together as loincloths. What changed was the introduction of a Fallen Nature and they then realized they were naked without the covering of light.
Genesis 3:7 | Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. |
Genesis 3:21 | The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them. |
When God made garments of skin for Adam and Eve, this was more than just to give them something better than fig leaves. God could have given them many different things such as something made from the bark of a tree or some sort of current day cotton woven materials.
By giving God giving them the coats of skin, which Biblical Scholars point to being animal skin and fur, it was teaching the requirements that by the shedding of blood there was a covering for sins. A covering of animal skin, which required the death of an animal was a temporary action that points to the redeemer, Jesus Christ who's death was a permanent payment for sins.
Hebrews 9:22 | Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. |
Ephesians 1:7 | In Him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God s grace |
Hebrews 9:14 | How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God! |
This is a quick addendum type-of section of this topic, where more can be read in the Age of the Earth and Gap Theory topics.
This author has not seen any commentaries speak about how long Adam first and then both Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden, where often the connotation received from a Sunday Church Service or a Bible Study, is the time in the Garden of Eden was not that long because of Lucifer's involvement. This cannot be so easily discerned, where the scriptures do not state how long.
It is important to know that Adam named all of the animals and creatures that God created, which this is not a trivial task Naming of all of the animals could not have been easily completed in a short period of time. Additionally, after Eve was created, then the time they spent together could have been a very long-time also in order for Adam and Eve to have the bond of love that the scriptures infer to have Adam join Eve in the predicament of the eating of the Forbidden Fruit.
Genesis 2:20 | And the man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him. |
Adam and Eve could have been in the Garden of Eden for thousands, millions and even possibly billions of years. There are possibly Christians who are reading this and may scoff at the possibility of millions or billions of years, whereas mentioned in the topic on the Gap Theory, God might have used millions to billions of years to show all of the Angels that Lucifer was not capable of fixing anything that was tainted and wrecked before God did a new creation in the existing Earth in Genesis.
There are so many beautiful, thought provoking, liberating, inspiring verses here in the first few chapters of Genesis which almost jumps off of the page requiring examination where the writer had to restrain himself to stay on topic while writing. As a suggestion, the possible next topics to read, besides those listed below, is possibly Noah's Ark that clears up one area of many of the difficult and inadequate Christian commentary subjects.
