Preface

Gematria has its roots in the Kabalistic method of studying the scriptures of the Old and later the New Testament, for identification of patterns that authenticate God as the author by using:

which the Scripture consistently use to indicate a specific purpose, which will have a total, divisible or be equivalent to specific numbers such as 3, 7, 49 or 50.

The more conservative usage, that many who research Gematria, is the discoveries of the actual number equivalence to letters and words in the scriptures which have patterns to conform or corroborate the scriptural passage.  There are specific numbers that are used in Gematria which are shown in the table list below, which have been found to be consistently used in the scriptures.

As noted by many Biblical Scholars, one of many authenticating parts of the scriptural expositional authenticity was 40 authors writing 66 books over thousands of years which all used the same patterns, word choices, themes and so much more.

The most important point of the scriptures is the theme of Jesus Christ, who is prophesized in the in the Old Testament as the future Messiah, followed with Jesus Christ being revealed in the New Testament.  Jesus Christi is in the Way for us to have Salvation, and we all need Jesus Christ as our Savior.  This does not mean that other interesting studies of the scriptures are not relevant, as long as they do not take away from the primary focus of Jesus Christ.

For this author, another interesting authenticating facet of the scriptures is the encryptions in the scriptures which are being re-discovered today by the use of computer algorithms.  Additionally, God is using patterns, models, a heptadic structure throughout the entire Bible.

Warning, Prohibition and Acceptable

When searching the internet, there are more advanced studies of Gematria being done by assigning values to incidents, dates and other aspects of the scriptures including modern-day events.  These types of approaches will contain algorithms which discuss ideas such as prime numbers, the number PI, and segments of a long number for a pattern for associations with numbers that conform to suggested dates in the scriptures, and so much more.  There might be some truth or fascinating aspects to the equations and results, but rhetorically the question should be asked if this type of searching is going into an area that can yield spurious findings.

There are unfortunately, many theories surrounding the numbers in the scriptures that approach highly speculative conjectures, which in this author's opinion do not honor God.  Additionally, these type of uses of Gematria often seem to approach a forbidden area for the Christian.  Looking for obscure patterns based on esoteric number associations, patterns and sequences, seem to always have the documentation from investigators heading into predictions

A quip from Chuck Missler, who endorsed Gematria in some of his excellent MP3 documentaries but not the extremes of it, that this author is paraphrasing is:

"The danger of Gematria is the potential of creating a new type of religion which requires members with the best computer programs to belong in order to find data where people without the means are excluded."

The only two acceptable use of Gematria, in many Biblical Scholars and this author's mind, is
  1. Looking at the consistent use of numbers in the scriptures to mean a specific idea,
  2. Counting God's use of words, letters and other patterns that add up to specific numbers,  (see Ivan Panin's work)

both of which point to the numbers listed in the next section of this topic, which then honor God and show that God inspired the very words and even letters in the scriptures.

Source is from wikipedia on Ivan Panin's work:

" Until his death in 1942, Ivan Panin labored continuously on the discovery of numerical patterns throughout the Hebrew language of the Old Testament and the Greek language of the New Testament, often to the detriment of his health. His conclusion was that if these patterns were implemented intentionally by man, the collaboration of all writers of the Bible stretched over many disparate years would be required, in addition to the condition that each of them be a mathematician of the highest order. "

Table of Numbers and Significance

The following is a chart of the most significant meaning associated with numbers in the scriptures that are consistently used to convey a meaning and a pattern.  The Bible is composed of 66 books written by over 40 different authors that wrote in different points in history, where God has used and will use events to occur in prophecy to have the patter of use of numbers to convey a meaning for us.

Number Significance
1 Singleness, Unity and Primacy
2 Witnessing and support
3 Completion, Marking of Perfection, and Perfect Unity
4 Relates to the earth
5 Associated with Grace, Mercy and Blessings
6 The number of man, not complete and missing something
7 Divine perfection and completion
8 New Beginnings
9 Fullness of blessings
10 Human Government and Law
11 Disorder, and not complete
12 Divine Government and God's authority with perfection and completeness
13 Association with mourning and sorrows
14 A multiple of 7 that represents perfection and completion.
15 Resting
17 Victory over the enemy
20 Complete
21 Wickedness and Rebellion
30 Symbolism for dedicating to a duty
40 Testing and Trials
49 Completion by God
50 Importance of Feasts, Ceremonies and Celebrations
70 Judgment and Human delegations
200 Insufficiency
490 Periods of Time in History, and times of tribulation
666 Antichrist who is the Beast of Revelation
1000 God's perfect administration
1260 Earth Preparation and Judgment

Note that there is the number 961 that is called by some people as God's number because the square root of 961 is 31 where reversing the 31 to the number 13 and squaring 13 equals 169 which is symmetrical to 961.

Six other special numbers that are not Gematria but have significance:

17,640 Temple is rebuilt, refurbished and operational.  Old Testament Cannon is completed
156,740 Day Messiah executed
173,880 Total days in the 69 Weeks Prophecy of Daniel
1,260 Three and one half years, using 360 calendar of the scriptures, that divides the 70th Week of Daniel where the last three and one half years is the Tribulation Period.
1290 Mysterious days of Daniel 12:11-12
1335 Mysterious days of Daniel 12:11-12

Example of the Number 3

The number 3 is used to reference Divine Perfection and Completeness.  These scriptural references are from the topic on Three Day in the Bible.  Jesus Christ spent three days in the tomb after dying on the Cross at 3pm in the afternoon.  See the topic on the Day Jesus Christ was Crucified.

Genesis 1:9-13 9 And God said, Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear. And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground land, and the gathered waters he called seas. And God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds. And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning the third day

This is known as the day of double blessing.  God blessed each day except for the 2nd day, which was Monday.  Not that there was anything wrong with Monday, it was just not blessed as good .  The on the third day, God says it is good twice.  Many Jewish weddings are held on Tuesday in the hopes of a double blessing.
Genesis 22:4

It took 3 days for Abraham to reach the destination to offer Isaac up a burnt offering.

It shows that Abraham trusted God to bring Isaac back from the dead, figuratively speaking.  At the moment that God told Abraham he was to sacrifice Isaac, then Isaac was dead in Abraham's eyes.  When God stopped Abraham hands after the third day of the initial pronouncement, it models the same as Christ being resurrected from the dead.

Jonah 1:17 And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah.  And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

From Jonah 2:2, Jonah is praying from depth of Sheol which is the grave.  In other words, it appears that Jonah had died in the belly of the fish and God resurrected him.
John 2:19 Destroy this temple, [of His body] and in three days I will raise it up.
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
Luke 24:46 The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,

Some Additional Examples of Gematria

Are there Peculiar Mathematical Examples?

There are peculiar mathematical examples that not relevant in terms of the Scriptures.  They are statistical types of oddities and fun patterns.

As an example: 9 multiplied by 1089 equals 9801 which is the reverse of the original 1089.

There are many other examples, but the important part of Gematria is the consistency of use of specific numerics in the scriptures.

Ivan Panin called the Modern-Day Father of Bible Numerics

This author is not going to attempt to give a summary of the extremely massive word product done by Ivan Panin.   Ivan is not alone as there are the use of many computer software tools that are finding more and more amazing numerical properties of the entirety of the Scriptures.

This is an excerpt from the topic on proving that Mark chapter 16 did not have verses 9 through 20 added:

This is one partial example just using the Greek word counts in Chapter 16 where verses one through 20 must be used to have the count of Greek words divisible by seven.

Verse Verse in English Greek Words Count   Greek Words Count Greek Words Count
1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the [mother] of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. 20   20
2 And very early in the morning the first [day] of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. 13   13
3 And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? 14   14
4 And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. 11   11
5 And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. 16   16
6 And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him. 22   22
7 But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you. 21   21
8 And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any [man;] for they were afraid. 18   18
9 Now when [Jesus] was risen early the first [day] of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. 15     15
10 [And] she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept. 10     10
11 And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not. 9     9
12 After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country. 14     14
13 And they went and told [it] unto the residue: neither believed they them. 8     8
14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. 20     20
15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature 14     14
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. 9     9
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 15     15
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. 17     17
19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. 18     18
20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with [them,] and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. 17     17

Some Great Sources for Codes in the Scriptures

Take a look at this link from Grant Jeffrey which is a wonderful read that discusses the matter on the "Signature of God".  Another two great links from Chuck Missler are "Beloved Numerologist" and "Hidden Codes in the Bible".
